Looking for a way to entertain the family and keep the kids active and busy while on your Colorado bicycle trip? There’s a plethora (yes, we said plethora) of Colorado family weekend getaway activities to pair with your cycling adventure. Here’s our top 5 Colorado family weekend getaway destinations:
Glenwood Springs
Located 160 miles west of Denver, Glenwood Springs is an easy and scenic drive up I-70. Adventure awaits you at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. Thrill rides and cave tours will keep you and the kiddos busy. If you’re brave enough, test your mettle on the giant canyon swing that will launch you out and over Glenwood Canyon and 1300’ above the Colorado River. You might be more suited for the Alpine Coaster, where you’ll scream (literally) down 3400’ until you come to a gentle stop. Don’t worry, you’ll be in full control. USA Today named the Alpine Coaster at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park one of the
“10 Best Roller-Coaster Rides of Your Life.” in 2014. Not to be missed.
There are plenty of other things to keep you occupied and active while in Glenwood Springs. Try cycling the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail on our Rocky Mountain Adventure Self-guided Bike tour or raft down the Colorado River. Take a break from cycling and hike Hanging Lake, a marvel of Mother Nature and a geological wonder.
Vail
Take a ride up the Eagle Bahn Gondola and Voila! You’re at 10,350’ and ready to enjoy your day at Adventure Ridge. You’ll find there’s a little of everything, from a kid’s zip line to a kid’s rope course (don’t despair – there are adult versions, too). For a more sedate experience, try your hand at the interpretive animal theme mini-golf course. This 9 hole par 3 “course” spotlights local Vail Valley animal species and is sure to keep you informed and entertained. There’s even a kid-friendly FAC (Friday Afternoon Club), where you’ll enjoy everything from food & beverages to live music and free lawn games.
You might opt to hike the Berry Picker Trail from the base of Lionshead to Adventure Ridge – no tickets required! How about a bike ride down Vail Pass? Or try your hand at fly fishing? There’s plenty of opportunity to feed your adventurous spirit in Vail. Photo credit Julie Kruger Photography
